How to Split Group Trip Expenses Without Arguments

Group trips go wrong when costs are tracked in five people's heads. One shared log and one settle-up at the end fixes almost all of it.

Before the trip

During the trip

Log every shared expense right away: what it was, how much, who paid, and who it was for. Spread the paying around. It's fine for one person to front the cabin and another the groceries.

After the trip: settle once

Add up what each person paid and what they owe. Then use the fewest payments that bring everyone to zero. With four people, it's usually three payments or fewer, not one payment for every expense.

Alex paid $800 for the cabin, Sam $164.40 for groceries, and Jo $90 for kayaks (Riley skipped them). Three payments settle it: Riley → Alex $241.10, Jo → Alex $181.10, Sam → Alex $106.70.

Paying each other back

Use whatever payment app the group already uses, and settle within a week while everyone still remembers the trip. For international trips, a low-fee transfer service avoids bank conversion markups.

FAQ

How do you split a group trip when some people skip activities?

Only the people who joined pay for that activity. In the trip splitter, untick everyone who skipped it.

What's the fewest number of payments to settle a group?

At most one fewer than the number of people with a balance, and often fewer when subgroups cancel out. The trip splitter finds the minimum.
