Splitwise alternatives, compared honestly

Splitwise is the best-known expense splitter, but its free plan now limits how many expenses you can add each day. Here's how five alternatives compare, including where they beat us.

Disclosure: Billsplitly is our product. Facts below come from each app's own website or app store listing, checked October 20, 2026. Apps change often, so check the listing before you decide. We don't list prices because they vary by country and change often; each app shows its current price before you pay.

Where each one wins

Splitwise

Wins at: a long-running shared ledger. Everyone logs in and sees the same balances, recurring bills repeat automatically, you get an activity feed and edit history, and in the US you can pay back through Venmo or PayPal from the app [2]. Watch out for: the free plan caps you at 4 new expenses a day [1]. That's easy to hit on a trip. Receipt scanning, currency conversion and search are Pro features.

Settle Up

Wins at: complicated splits. It handles unequal weights and several people paying for one item, and it finds the fewest transfers. It supports all currencies with live rates and exports to CSV [3]. Premium can be bought for a whole group instead of per person. Watch out for: the free version shows ads, and several extras need Premium.

Splittr

Wins at: fast entry on a trip. It works offline, needs no registration, syncs with friends, supports all currencies and exports to PDF and CSV [4]. Watch out for: it's iPhone-only right now. The developer says a rebuilt Android app and a web app are coming back in 2026 [5].

Tricount

Wins at: being free with no caps. Its Google Play listing says "no ads, no limits, no subscriptions" and lists multiple currencies, offline use and photos [6]. Watch out for: Tricount is owned by the bank bunq. Some comparison sites report that export features were removed, so check before relying on them.

Splid

Wins at: offline trips abroad. No sign-up, works offline, supports more than 150 currencies and exports PDF or Excel summaries. Extras are one-off in-app purchases, not a subscription [7]. Watch out for: it's an app only, with no website version.

Billsplitly

Wins at: household bills that aren't split evenly. You can split each bill equally, by income, by room size, by percentage or by custom shares, and see the fewest payments to settle up. It's a website, so there's nothing to install and no account, and your numbers stay in your browser. It also has dedicated calculators for rent by room, prorated utilities and couples' income splits. Where we lose: we don't keep a shared running ledger that everyone edits, and we have no receipt scanning, currency conversion, payment integration or offline mobile app. If your group adds expenses every day for months, a dedicated app like the ones above will suit you better.
